Asian American Scholarships

As the populations of the Asian American communities rapidly increase, there becomes more of a need for Asian American scholarships. Likewise, the competition for these scholarships increases each year as more and more students are applying for them. There are many Asian American scholarships available in a vast array of fields so young people in the Asian American communities are able to follow whatever dreams and career goals inspire them. For young people whose focus is to excel in their academic careers, scholarships a huge advantage as it relieves much of the financial burden that comes along with a college or university education.

The Asian American Scholarship Fund, run through the U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce, is one of the scholarships that can be beneficial for high school seniors. High school seniors who have shown academic achievement and have demonstrated financial need are eligible to receive up to $5,000. Applicants must be a permanent resident of the United States and of Asian heritage. They should have a 3.3 GPA or higher, exhibited community service involvement, and display leadership in extracurricular activities. The application should include a 2" by 2" headshot (not scanned) with a listing of any academic honors, community service endeavors, and extracurricular involvement (up to two pages long). Also included should be a 100 word bio and a 500 word essay called, "Why I Need This Scholarship" (signed and dated by the student and a guidance counselor). Transcripts and two letters of recommendation from a high school teacher and a community service organization should be integrated. All monies will be paid directly to the college or university that the student is to attend and this scholarship is not available for those attending correspondence or internet based degrees.

The PepsiCo Hallmark Scholarship is another general scholarship that can give Asian American students and advantage through their university years. The eligibility and application guidelines are the same as the Asian American Scholarship Fund requirements.

American Asian scholarships like these can be applied to any approved university or college in the United States but there are many others that are designated within individual colleges and universities. There are also Asian American scholarships that focus on specific fields or specific types of degrees.
