Aside from studying, attending classes and meeting social obligations, keeping a college dorm room clean can be one of the hardest parts of going off to school. Many students find the task so difficult for several reasons, like they were never required to clean while living at home, or they have far too much stuff crammed into a very tiny space, or they're simply too busy. But keeping your dorm room clean can really work wonders on a student's state of mind and health, and the chore doesn't have to take all day either.
First, students can start by simply making their bed. As simple as this sounds, the bed is often the focal point in a dorm room since the space is so tiny. There is no need for decorative pillows or fancy bedding, just make clean and tight tucks of the sheets, smooth the comforter on top and give the sleeping pillows a little fluff. A neat-looking bed can go a long way towards making a dorm room feel cleaner and more organized. Next, students can pick up any extraneous trash. Getting rid of old pizza boxes, soda cans and food containers is a great start. These things can mold after prolonged exposure to air and cause allergic reactions in students. Just remember to recycle the items that can be recycled and to dispose of all the trash properly.
Another easy and clean fix is to gather up the laundry. Dirty clothes should be collected from the floor, bed and the bottom of the closet and placed into a hamper. If the hamper is overflowing, it might be time to head to the washing machine. Clean clothes can be put back on hangers or in drawers. If a student has too many clothes for the amount of storage space provided, they should consider storing their seasonal clothes at home or under the bed. Only having season appropriate clothes in a closet can lessen the clutter and make more storage space for other items. Finally, students can take a damp, soapy cloth or cleaning wipes and clean off any surfaces that collect dust. Wipe down book shelves, desk tops, and fan blades to keep dust from collecting, making your dorm look dirty and causing allergies.
These quick and easy cleaning tips can be accomplished by students in less than 15 minutes. With a little determination and elbow grease, any dorm room can be spic and span in no time!
