Teachers that wish to specialize in helping children and adults in improving their reading and literacy skills will benefit from a Master of Science in Education in reading and literacy. Courses will include methodologies in reading education, working with students with special needs, dyslexia and reading abilities, and implementing reading strategies within the classroom. Students will also study the history of literacy and reading programs, as well as developing strong communication skills and skills in working one-on-one with students.
Teachers may also take specific courses to use a variety of technologies in reading and literacy including specialized computer programs, augmented communication devices and other strategies that include other methods besides technology. Graduates may work with adults or children, English as a second language learners or students with reading or developmental disabilities. They may also work as consultants within school districts to assist other teachers to use reading and literacy strategies in the classroom.
