Cornell aims to be a learning community that serves society by educating the leaders of tomorrow and helping to expand the frontiers of knowledge. The school hopes to foster personal discovery and growth, encourage creativity, and promote scholarship in a highly diverse spectrum of men and women from all over the world. The school wants to push the boundaries of existing knowledge, and with the help of students and faculty, make new discoveries.

Cornell was founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White as a coeducational, non-sectarian institution where admission was offered to any student wishing to learn regardless of religion or race. Opened shortly after the Civil War, its founders intended that the new university would teach and make contributions in all fields of knowledge. Today, Cornell is part of the illustrious Ivy League, and its Ithaca, New York, campus brings in students from all over the world. The university also has two medical campuses, one located in New York City and the other in Qatar.

Cornell University is well known for its record of academic excellence. The school spends hundreds of millions each year on cutting edge research. Additionally, the faculty is comprised of Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize Winners, Turing Award Winners, and numerous other academic honors of the highest degree. The university has been ranked 12th in the world by U.S. News and World Report, making it a prestigious and well-respected school.

Cornell doesn’t think that a busy schedule or a full-time job should keep students from pursuing knowledge. Distance learning course can include online education, video tapes and CD-ROMs. Students will be able to interact with professors via phone contact or through e-mail. Courses are offered in both credit and non-credit varieties and in a wide range of subjects from Art History to Social Statistics. Many programs are geared towards professionals, helping improve skills on the job and possibly career prospects.
