South Dakota Universities, Accredited Colleges, and Degrees

South Dakota's higher education system is made up of six public universities, four postsecondary technical institutes, 10 private colleges and universities, and four tribal colleges and universities. The state's public universities are governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents, a 10-member body that sets policies and administers scholarships to qualified students. The University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University are two of the best universities in South Dakota. Both institutions were ranked No. 199 among the top national universities by U.S. News & World Report. With more than 12,000 students, South Dakota State University is the largest university in South Dakota by enrollment. The university, located in Brookings, offers undergraduate and graduate programs from its six colleges, including the College of Engineering, College of Arts & Sciences, and College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences. The university also offers certificate, associate, bachelor's, and master's degree programs in areas of study such as sociology, business, journalism, and nursing through its distance education platform.

Meanwhile, the University of South Dakota serves nearly 10,000 students at its 274-acre campus in Vermillion. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in many disciplines, and its rural medicine graduate program was ranked No. 8 in the nation by U.S. News. Similar to South Dakota State University, the University of South Dakota offers an extensive set of online degrees including a Master of Business Administration (MBA), a bachelor's and master's degree in addiction studies, and a master's in counseling and psychology in education. These online colleges in South Dakota highlight the state's emphasis on promoting distance education through its Electronic University Consortium of South Dakota. The consortium is a collaboration between the state's six public universities that enables a student from one university to enroll in online courses offered by another university as long as they meet the institution's admissions requirements. The credits from the other university would then apply to the student's academic progress at his or her main college.

Southeast Technical Institute and Sisseton Wahpeton College are the two largest junior colleges in South Dakota. Located in Sioux Falls, Southeast Technical Institute offers on-campus certificate and associate degree programs in business, computer science, engineering, health, horticulture, and more. Its online offerings include associate degrees in business administration, entrepreneurship, computer programming, marketing, and insurance and financial services. Western Dakota Technical Institute, Mitchell Technical Institute, and Lake Area Technical Institute also offer some form of distance learning opportunities.
