Vermont Scholarships

When many people think of Vermont, they think of maple syrup and changing leaves. Or maybe they think of Ben and Jerry’s. But there is more going on in Vermont than ice cream and maple sapping. There are students trying to pay for college. Scholarships are very often the only way that some students will be able to afford to pay for their college educations. In the state of Vermont, there are certainly students who need scholarships. Student loans only pay for a limited amount of the cost, and freshmen receive less than upperclassmen. This means that to get to the point that students are eligible for more in federal student loans, which they must manage to pay for the first two years first. This can create quite a conundrum without scholarships. Very often, students will find that different states will offer scholarships that are not offered to students or residents in any other state. In the state of Vermont this is true like it is for anywhere else.

Students in Vermont who are interested in studying geology might be eligible for the Angelo Tagliocozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship. Students who live on the Northeast coast are eligible for this scholarship to pursue their studies in geology. The maximum value of the award is $5000. Students are able to renew the scholarship as long as they maintain satisfactory academic progress. Students are selected for this scholarship based on academic excellence and financial need.

The Vermont NEA/Maida F. Townsend Scholarship is available to students who are residents of Vermont. These scholarships are $1000 and are awarded annually at the Vermont State Assembly. This scholarship is based solely on merit – not on need. Students intending to major in education are given some preference over students intending to major in another field. In order to apply for the scholarship, students must write a cover letter explaining what makes them unique, what kind of goals they have, and what kinds of continuing education plans they have. Two letters of reference and academic transcripts are required for the application process.
