For those attending university or college in the state of Louisiana there are many options when seeking out financial aid to help reduce your educational costs. With tuition costs and other fees increasing constantly it is imperative for some students to inquire about any or all Louisiana scholarships that may be available to them. Two of the most popular scholarships for the state are the Leveraging Educational Assistance Program (LEAP) and the TOPS Honors Award. These two programs alone accounted for over twenty million dollars in financial aid during the last calendar year.
The Leveraging Educational Assistance Program is available to those in universities and either two or four year colleges. If you are a qualifying student the LEAP program will provide you with need based funds from both federal and state governments. Awards are determined each year based on the number of qualified applicants and the availability of funds. At least three thousand Louisiana scholarships from the LEAP program are provided each year with a minimum grant of two hundred dollars to a maximum of two thousand dollars.
A second of many Louisiana scholarships is the TOPS Honors Award which is also made available to students in universities as well as those in two or four year colleges. The award offers an amount equal to the weighted average public tuition plus an addition eight hundred dollars. Recipients must have a minimum high school grade point average of 3.5 as well as an ACT score of at least 27. During the last calendar year amounts awarded to students varied from as low as fifteen hundred and forty one dollars to thirty eight hundred and ninety four dollars. Applicants must be full time students as well as United States citizens. High school students are also considered for this scholarship.
