Of all the financial assistance programs that are available to prospective students in the state of Kansas, one of the most popular is the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program. This grant, along with other Kansas scholarships, forms the basis for a state wide funding program that helps those who need assistance with educational costs the most. Upon leaving high school, the enormous burden of paying one’s way through at least four years of university or college can be overwhelming. Although it is federal funded, The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship is perhaps one of the most sought after of all Kansas scholarships. This particular scholarship is granted for a period of four consecutive years of study at an institution of higher learning and is awarded on the basis of merit. This Kansas scholarship requires that the recipient of this award have a seven semester grade point average of 3.85 or higher based on a 4.0 system. A three hundred to five hundred word essay must clearly state how the potential recipient will utilize their abilities to achieve their lifetime goals. Two separate letters of recommendation from school counselors, teachers or principals are usually necessary. If acquiring a letter of recommendation from an outside source the highest regarded are those from either employers or ministers. In addition to all of this, a composite score of 32 or higher on the ACT Assessment is required.
