Hawaii Scholarships

The state of Hawaii is constantly encouraging their young people to grow and expand their learning through attending post-secondary educational facilities. Because many of their young people come from disadvantaged families, young people are encouraged to work hard in school and are rewarded through scholarships. Hawaiian scholarships provide the necessary financial funding for students who wish to further their education.

The Ke Ali'I Pauahi Foundation offers scholarships to hard working students. They may be merit based and/or need based scholarships. Although preference is given to students who are of Hawaiian based ancestry, the applications are open to the general public, including students who have not attended Kamehameha Schools. Scholarships may not cover the full needs of students so students are parents are encouraged to look into other financing options on their own.

The John M. Ross Foundation offers scholarships to students that undergraduates and long-time residents of the island of Hawaii. Everyone may apply but preference is given to those who are born on the island and have a family history on the island. Students should include a personal statement detailing how they intend to return to the island or remain on the island after graduating. Seventeen awards are given with an average amount of $1,206.

High school graduates from the County of Maui, including Lanai and Molokai are eligible for the K. M. Hatano Scholarship Fund. This scholarship was created by Mr. Yasuji Hatano, the President of the Kokusai Motor Cars Company of Hawaii, in 1987. He created this scholarship to recognize men and women who show leadership and community involvement in the area and who have demonstrated academic excellence. The scholarship can be applied to any four year program in a college or university in the state of Hawaii. Ten students are awarded this scholarship of $1000.

Other Hawaiian scholarships are available for students. Many of them are applicable for students of specific areas. Others are for students that are focusing on particular fields of study.
