Nursing Scholarships

Going through nursing school is tough enough without having to worry about money as well. A nursing degree requires many hours of studying, research, classes, and practicum experience. Holding a job on top of all of that is often too much to ask of most students. Nursing scholarships are a great option for serious students that wish to give their academic career as much attention as possible.

Some nursing scholarships are given out in exchange for an agreement of services over a period of time. One such scholarship is the one give out by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Recipients of this nursing scholarship receive tuition and required fees as well as other costs that may be incurred including books, lab expenses, and other clinical supplies. As well, a monthly allowance covers day to day living costs. For the 2007-2008 academic year recipients of this scholarship receive $1,202 a month for living expenses. After the recipient finishes their degree they are placed at a health facility where there is a critical shortage of nurses. For young, single students this type of nursing scholarship can help them get through university and introduce them to new places and people.

The National Student Nurses' Association also offers several nursing scholarships for different levels of education as well as information about where to find other scholarships. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 and over $125,000 is awarded every year. To be elligible, students must be enrolled in a state approved nursing program and should be taking no less than 6 credits per semester. They should also be involved in nursing organizations and community health acitivities. An association such as this may not offer as much money or as many benefits as the previous type of scholarship, but they also ask for little in exchange. The only thing the student needs to do is maintain an acceptable grade average and be active in nursing related communities.

Nursing scholarships can help future nurses to concentrate on what is important - classes and learning. They also ease stress and pressure by removing some of the financial burden.
