Graduates of a program in tourism and hospitality are prepared to enter the exciting career of restaurant, hotel and travel management and supervision. Many graduates will find entry level and more senior positions as hotel managers or assistant managers, convention planners, special event planners for hotels, meeting facilities and resorts, advertising, sales and marketing professionals in the tourism and hospitality field or as travel agents, travel coordinators or guides and group travel facilitators. Many of these careers require a strong foundation in business management, human resource management and budget and financial management. Emphasis will be placed on developing leadership skills and techniques that are appropriate for the hospitality and tourism industry.
The courses will include topics on computer technology for planning holiday packages, booking tickets, completing personalized vacations, managing hotel bookings, plane reservations and transportation. In addition issues relating to the ethical and legal issues within the tourism and hospitality industry, management of employees, quality control and service coordination are all addressed. Students will gain a complete understanding of the various aspects of running or managing a business within the tourism and hospitality industry from all aspects. Inventory control, supply and purchasing, pricing and financial management of assets will all be key components of the training.
One of the most critical aspects of the tourism and hospitality training and degree will be the importance of effective communication and decision making within the industry. Customer satisfaction will be enhanced through appropriate use of these skills and they are considered the cornerstone of the industry. Conflict resolution, working with various groups and management teams, as well as reporting and organizing staff is addressed through practical assignments and projects. When students graduate from the course they will be prepared to handle challenging situations in a professional fashion that keeps customers happy as well as supports staff.
