The history of religions and religious believe is the focus of a program of studies in theology. A relatively new degree, theology is usually offered under the humanities department and allows students to concentrate on the various aspects of religion within a culture or globally. Most theology students are not necessarily planning to advance to religious training degrees rather they may be working as educators, counselors, sociologists or students that do plan to continue on in their studies to become religious leaders. The courses are designed to provide exposure to many different types of religions around the world and provide opportunities for students to understand both the differences and similarities of various religions and the implications of these variances in the world today.
Students in the program will study the origins of religion from the various major religions as well as specific religious beliefs in Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, and other major religions of the past and present. Students will also take classes on ethics, philosophy, research methodology, political events, human behavior, sociology and multiculturalism and cultural sensitivity. While the emphasis is on religion on the theology program the impact of the religion on the people of the area as well as the international implications of the religion is also addressed throughout the program.
Programs in theology are both student focused as well as globally focused which makes them an excellent educational choice for students that wish to enter the workplace as law makers, administrators, counselors and attorneys. Students will learn to approach problems and conflicts from a historical perspective with an understanding of the interests and positions of the various groups in cultural and religious conflicts and issues. Theology courses are designed to allow students to develop an appreciation of all religions as well as their impact on both the religious group and the global community.
