Distance Learning & Online Technology Certificates Degree Programs
Technology certificates are specialized courses that are typically taken either as stand alone programs or as an additional or enhanced class within a degree program. Technology certificates show others that you have completed specialized training to certification standards in one or more specific areas of technology as indicated on the certificate. The certificate is usually endorsed by the specific training program, not necessarily through the higher learning agency that is offering the associates, bachelor or master program. Since these certificates are very specific there is usually a much shorter program of study that is extremely specific and intense, followed by a structured examination and possibly even a practical application of the knowledge before the certificate is granted.
Some of the technology certificates that can be obtained in conjunction with degrees or as stand alone certificates include those for specific programming languages such as C++, Java or SQL. In addition companies such as Cisco Microsoft and Apple can also offer certificates in specific issues such as networking, Windows networking administration or other operating system based certifications. Some other programs and applications such as databases like Oracle may also offer technology certificates that can be used to show prospective employers that you have completed this specialized training and have passed all the required standards to obtain the certification.
Some certifications have a renewal date and a requirement for additional and ongoing professional development to maintain the certification. Others do not have an expiration date, although with constantly evolving technology they may be quickly outdated. Most technology certificates are obtained through intensive workshops or online courses designed for professionals already working in the information technology field. General certificates such as internet and website development or and introduction to computer programming languages are also available.
