Distance Learning & Online Taxation Degree Programs

A specialization with the accounting and finance area, a degree in taxation prepares graduates to work for governing agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), major companies or small business, private individuals or through taxation services. Some taxation specialists may also work as accountants, auditors, bookkeepers or financial planners and managers. Typically those graduates of bachelor or associates degrees in taxation will work as assistants to accountants and auditors and those with more advanced degrees may be hired directly to perform tax preparation or bookkeeping. Professionals may also work privately for individuals, small companies or even larger companies on a yearly basis.

Courses within the taxation and accounting fields will include basic and advanced accounting principles and the various types of accounting reporting and report preparation. In addition students will take basic business management courses including options such as marketing and sale, retail, budgeting and finance and risk assessment and management. All students will take the appropriate courses in local, state and federal tax preparation including legal, regulatory and ethical considerations in tax preparation. The courses will cover the appropriate filing of forms, taxation schedules and requirements, business and personal taxation and international business taxation. Some taxation students may also focus on very specialized areas such as nonprofits, government agencies and specialized populations and taxation requirements.

Taxation students will also gain experience in using the various online and software based taxation programs available for both professionals and businesses. With a strong background in using computer programs and transmitting information in secure, encrypted or protected files taxation students will be well prepared to work from home or to set up their own businesses to provide services for businesses from remote offices and off-site locations. Students that wish to provide online taxation services often take specific training in network security and information technology.
