Distance Learning & Online Sports Management Degree Programs
Graduates of a sports management degree have several career options including the management of professional, semi-professional or local teams , sports medicine, sports promotion and marketing or even as assistants to managers, clubs or sports organizations. Students that complete a degree in sports management usually focus on one sport, typically one in which they have a high level or interest or one that they have played in the past or been competitive in. Sports management may also include individual sports, not just team events. Some sports managers may work for colleges, universities and other campuses managing teams or working with coaches to oversee student athletic programs.
A degree in sports management will include classes in sports medicine, marketing and sales as they relate to both amateur and professional sports, sports management theory, human behavior and motivation, coaching, ethical issues and responsibilities of managers and coaches as well as overall business management. The business management classes may include financial management, budget development and accounting, human resource development and sales and marketing. Networking, effective communication, appropriate and effective decision making strategies as well as team building and working as pare of the management team will all be highlighted throughout the course of study.
Most graduates of the sports management program will start with local teams or semi-professional teams before moving to professional team positions. Coaches or those already working in the sports field may choose to complete a degree in sports management to improve their opportunity for mid level to senior management positions in higher level teams. Some sports management graduates may also work as managers and supervisors of sports associations and governing agencies. Again, these positions are usually filled by graduates with more advanced degrees, training and experience within the particular sport.
