Distance Learning & Online Special Education Degree Programs
Graduates from a degree program in special education will have the understanding needed to work with children that have different abilities and challenges within a classroom setting. Some children may have specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, a reading problem, or problems with processing written or spoken language, understanding or grasping math concepts, or behavioral issues that prevent them for being successful in standard classes. Some special education teachers may also work with students that are hearing or visually impaired or those that have mild, moderate or severe mental retardation. Special education also assists those students that have physical disabilities and conditions that prevent them from being able to participate in classrooms with assistance and modifications.
Special education programs allows students to learn how to modify and adapt both the classroom environment and the curriculum and class work to accommodate the child and maximize their ability to learn within the class. In some situations the special education teacher may work in a specialized class setting such as a behavior classroom or a classroom for children that have more several conditions and require one-on-one assistance at all times.
Students in special education programs will learn all the basic teaching skills of other students in education classes, but will also spend more time focusing on the rules, regulations and laws regarding the education of special needs students. Since most special education students will have additional support in the form of teacher aides or special education aides, additional information on leadership, management and supervision is typically included in these programs. Emphasis is placed on appropriate and relevant evaluation and assessment of student progress and the ability to work in teams with outside professionals and school based specialists to ensure that all students get the best quality education possible.
