Distance Learning & Online Reading and Literature Degree Programs
The reading and literacy program of study will prepare graduates for a variety of teaching, training and research positions. Graduates may find employment as English as second language teachers for adults or children, specialists within school districts that consult or provide training on teaching reading and literacy, or as researchers and program advisors in the reading and literacy departments or teams within schools or school districts. Many reading and literacy teachers will also work very closely with parents and families to help them learn how to assist the child or how to work effectively and communicate to the schools in the case of families that speak another language.
Classes in reading and literacy focus on the specific skills needed to gain competency in these important areas. Courses on the history and development of the teaching of reading and literacy, current trends and best practices in teaching reading or literacy, specialized programs such as Reading Recovery or linguistic based programs as well as cultural issues, multiculturalism, teaching immigrants and working with children with special needs will all be addressed throughout classes. Other classes will assist in working with adult learners and various programs and curriculum that apply to working with an older or adult population as opposed to elementary aged children.
Typically students of the reading and literacy program have experience with speech and language, learning disabilities, dyslexia and other conditions that can impact the student's ability to read or integrate literature into their lives. Often these professionals work as consultants or specialists within a school district in training and educating other teachers about the various reading and literacy teaching methods and strategies. These professionals usually have a teaching certificate as well as a master's or higher level education in the reading and literacy field.
