Distance Learning & Online Radiologic Science Degree Programs

Students that are interested in the diagnostic aspects of patient care will find that a degree in radiologic science gives them the skills needed to enter this highly dynamic field. A graduate of a program of study in radiologic science will be able to work with patients in various types of imaging procedures including traditional x-rays through to computerized imaging and even digital imaging of hard and soft tissue within the body. Since these imaging procedures are now used more frequently to locate and diagnoses early stages of cancer, tumors and other abnormal cell growth and development the role of a radiologist is moving from simple confirming problems to actually discovering and identifying them before they become a health risk or concern for the patient.

A radiologist typically works within a hospital, clinic or radiological laboratory setting. They are more and more frequently involved in treatment teams, especially in cases where the patient has cancer or ongoing soft tissue trauma or problems. Radiologists may also work with heart patients and patients with gastrointestinal disorders and conditions. Radiologic science will allow students to gain practice and experience in the various types of imaging and x-ray techniques as well as with working with various patients ranging from the very young through to the elderly.

Throughout the program students will learn about appropriate imaging techniques for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography and digital mammography, computed tomography (CT), angiography, sonograms and other imaging techniques. In addition students will learn how to interpret and correctly identify the normal and abnormal images, as well as how to verify, report and detail the results that are found. Effective communication skills when working both with treatment teams and when working directly with patients will be stressed throughout the program. Students will also learn about the equipment they will be using, quality control issues, and appropriate interventional procedures.
