Public policy includes careers in both government and non-government agencies that deal with the development and implementation of policies within a country, area, or global venue. Public policy may include making laws, regulations, guidelines and restrictions as well as enhancing development, industry, settlement or expansion of a given sector of the economy or area of the country. Public policy may also be international in its scope including multiple countries or companies working together in the best interests of the citizens of the world. Students that graduate with a degree in public policy will have a strong understanding of the reasons for public policy, the ways to research and develop public policy, as well as the ethical and legal issues involved in public policy development and implementation.
A degree in public policy will include many business and management courses as these are the foundations of effective management and decision making. Courses such as human resource management and development, organizational structure and management, project management, finance and accounting principles and advanced applications as well as legal issues form the core of the course. In addition courses that focus on the exchange of information through technology will be very important. Issues around networking security, database management and access, public and private information sharing as well as global markets, economies and global policies will all be key elements.
Graduates of the program in public policy can find jobs as entry to senior level managers and elected officials within local, state or federal governments. They may also work for companies, nonprofit agencies, lobbyists and other special interest groups that work to represent the public in government and private sector issues and decisions. Public policy graduates may work as advocates, advisors, or even complete law degrees focusing on public policy and legal development.
