Distance Learning & Online Public Health Degree Programs
Many health professions, typically those with a master level program in public health, choose to work within small and large communities to provide medical services and health information and education in a user friendly and easily accessible setting. The degree in public health provides those professionals with the additional skills, knowledge and residency options to allow them to become effective managers, supervisors and directors of public health programs. Some graduates will work in direct services with the public while others may work in more administrative type positions within government agencies that regulate, monitor and fund the public health clinics and initiatives that are used.
Courses in public health include management classes that are applicable to both public health and health care administration. Classes in finance, budget development, public relations, health education and community health issues made up the largest part of the program. The courses in community health issues include immunization programs, early treatment programs, drug and alcohol dependency treatment, HIV/AIDs awareness, education and treatment, programs on preventing sexually transmitted diseases, treatment and options for epidemic controls, food safety and hygiene programs as well as special programs for pregnancy women, new mothers, and even school based programs for children.
Students in the program may also have an interest in taking courses that include another language, multiculturalism or cultural diversity, mental health courses, counseling, sociology, health education, personnel management and public relations and public speaking. Many professionals will also work as part of community committees and organizations as well as advisors to community leaders or even local or state governments or departments. Courses that help with understanding organizational structure, technology, interpersonal communication and even writing reports, grants and presentations will all be helpful and essential components of a public health professionals skills.
