There are several different degree programs available for those students interested in obtaining a degree in psychology. The basic level courses include either a bachelor of arts or science in psychology, while more advanced courses include master and doctoral level studies. With each increasing level the students will specialize more in their choice of courses and they will also gain more options for employment and career opportunities upon graduation. Psychology students can find work within school systems, organizations, human resource departments, advertising, sales and marketing agencies, counseling services, community based assistance services, as parole or probation officers, mental health facilities or private practices for those with a doctoral degree.
Psychology attempts to study and understand the working of the brain and mind, as well as create ways to work with individuals that are experiencing difficulties in learning, functioning or working within a particular environment. Some psychologists use specific theories in treatment while some use a more general approach. Psychology can also study the diseases and conditions of the human though process including abnormal behavior, criminal behavior or anti-social type behaviors. Psychology can involve people of all ages and typically students will learn skills in working with all age groups, but they may choose to focus on either children, adults or elderly patients or clients after they have moved into the master or higher level programs.
Classes in the psychology program will include human growth and development, child development, anatomy and physiology, brain functioning, biochemistry, mental health conditions and treatments, critical thinking, various types of therapies, counseling and group process, substance abuse, addictions, deviant behavior and abnormal psychology as well as criminology, diagnosis, assessment and evaluation. Students may also learn how to perform psychological evaluations, screening for mental health placements, suicide risk assessments or addiction assessments.
