Distance Learning & Online Physician Assistant Degree Programs
Graduates of a physician assistant program will play a key role in the treatment, assessment and evaluation of patients under the doctors care. Physician assistants typically complete most of the pre-examination work including completing the patient history, taking vital signs, weighing and completing blood pressure tests, or even preliminary physical examinations, treatment and follow-up. This is an important role as the doctor is able to see more patients in a day plus the patients have the ability to speak directly to the physician assistant regarding their health concerns or reason for the visit. The physician assistant can then succinctly share this information with the doctor and help prepare for the required treatment. Physician assistants may also complete the follow-up visit or assess the patient for treatment effectiveness at a later appointment. In most states the physician assistant can also write prescriptions, counsel on treatment options and perform basic trea! tments.
The physician assistant program will contain many of the same classes as the basic medical program. These courses will include patient assessment and diagnosis, illness and disease, emergency first aid, anatomy, pharmacology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis. In addition to the actual theoretical training those student in the physician assistant program will be required to do rotation in hospitals or treatment centers in the areas of family medicine, emergency treatment, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, geriatrics and obstetrics and gynecology.
Students in the physician assistant program will be required to pass rigorous certification upon graduation. They will also, like doctors, be required to complete yearly professional develop or continuing education to maintain their active certification. Various states have different requirements and schools and degree programs will ensure that students will meet the requirements of the state. Some students may choose to continue on to obtain important role of a physician assistant.
