Distance Learning & Online Physical Therapy Degree Programs

As with most types of therapy programs the degree in physical therapy will allow students to first learn the theoretical and knowledge based information and then have the ability to work in a hands-on setting to learn the specific skills needed to be a physical therapist. The role of a physical therapist is to help patients recovering from lengthy illnesses, surgeries, accidents and trauma or health conditions such as heart attacks and strokes to regain as much physical movement and ability as possible. Physical therapists may also work with patients that are learning to use artificial limbs or those that have had reconstructive or reattachment surgery on limbs. Physical therapists often work with elderly patients, especially after there has been a fall or recovery from a broken bone.

Courses in the physical therapy program will focus on the various aspects of movement including physiology, anatomy, muscle and skeletal development and body healing and growth. Classes will also cover medically relevant information such as surgical procedures like hip and knee surgery, recovery information for various types of surgical procedures, and the appropriate assessment, evaluation and development of treatment plans for patients. Physical therapy is often used in group settings as well as in one-on-one formats so students will learn group dynamics, motivation and alterative to traditional treatment options. Issues such as life care planning, grief counseling and human behavior are essential programs for most physical therapists that plan to work with the elderly.

Physical therapy programs will focus in on effective communication between treatment teams, patients, and caregivers. Physical therapists will also learn to develop therapy plans that address the patient's needs and goals as well as meet the requirements of the treating physician or treatment team. Students will learn to work in a team environment and within a health care system.
