Distance Learning & Online Pharmacy Degree Programs

The study of pharmacy involves the ability to understand, compound and fill prescriptions based on the information provided by the treating physician. A pharmacist does not just automatically fill all prescriptions however. They will meet with the patient and discuss all possible side effects and complications with other medication. Pharmacists may, in consultation with the prescribing doctor, recommend a more suitable medication or one that will not cause complications. Pharmacists will also check for allergies, health conditions or previous history of possible issues in taking the medication. Pharmacists will also explain how to take the medication, when to take the medication, and what to do if the patient starts having difficulties or side effects. Pharmacists may work in hospitals, medical clinics, drug stores or in the pharmacy department of chain stores.

Pharmacy degrees can be obtained in several different levels. The most basic degree is a bachelor level program, which, with certification, will allow graduates to work as pharmacy technicians. Master level and higher degrees will allow the graduate to work as pharmacists, supervising and overseeing the pharmacy as well as working directly with the customers and patients. Pharmacy technicians work to fill orders, maintain the laboratory or pharmacy, as well as maintain inventory, pharmacy and medicine records and other documentation as required by law. The pharmacist will supervise and monitor the pharmacy technicians and will also be responsible for quality control and working directly with patients to give advice and information on the prescriptions.

Courses in the pharmacy program will include advanced level chemistry courses, compounding procedures, mathematics, drug identification and management courses, classes on drug classification and safety issues with regards to prescriptions, dispensing regulations and laws, ethical issues, computer technology in pharmacies, inventory and monitoring, equipment calibration and verification as well as general medical classes.
