Distance Learning & Online Occupational Therapy Degree Programs
The course of study in a degree program in occupational therapy is designed to help students learn the physical, skeletal and muscular systems of the body to help injured or ill patients become physically active again. Occupational therapists may work in schools, medical clinics, private practices, in workplace environments, within rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes or other long-term care facilities. Some occupational therapists will also work in hospitals or psychiatric treatment facilities. There are also some occupational therapists that specialize in working with adults with special needs or with children or the elderly. Many occupational therapists will work with a wide range of individuals, accepting patients from doctor referrals or from hospitals or treatment centers.
Courses within the occupational therapy program will include medical courses such as anatomy and physiology, skeletal and muscular diseases and conditions, human growth and development as well as diagnosis, assessment and evaluative courses. In addition alternative medicines and treatments such as physical therapy, massage therapy, movement therapy and fine and gross muscle development and movement will also be addressed. Occupational therapists will also have some coursework on dealing with depression and other mental health conditions that often occur with an injury or prolonged illness or recovery period.
Graduates of the program will learn about the methods used to motive clients, pain management, appropriate interventions, referrals, as well as the legal and ethical considerations to working with different groups of patients and clients. Information on record keeping and reporting, information systems and client confidentiality and privacy issues, computer technology in occupational therapy and medicine and business management for those that are planning to work within a private practice. Students may also choose to spend additional time training in alternative medicines and therapies to compliment the more traditional methods taught within the occupational therapy course of study.
