Distance Learning & Online Mechanical Engineering Degree Programs

A professional with a degree in mechanical engineering can find employment in virtually any company or business that has a product to sell that is mechanical in nature. This includes household appliances, automotive industries, aerospace companies, manufacturing plants, mining and gas production, design companies, construction industries and heavy equipment manufacturers to name just a few. Mechanical engineering involves the invention, design, development and production of mechanical devices from the very small to the extremely large. Mechanical engineers use computer-aided drafting (CAD) blueprint and design technology, research and development and actual production and testing to develop new products for the market or to improve on existing mechanical items.

Mechanical engineers, like other professional engineers in the field, will focus on the analytical and mathematical basis for the development or enhancement of ideas. Typically courses will include technology such as CAD, graphic design, computer programming, software applications, advanced mathematical calculations, physics, chemistry, biology and fluid mechanics. In advanced level courses specific areas of interest, usually in the field of technology will be emphasized and enhanced. As mechanical engineers will also be responsible for testing and monitoring the quality of products they will be taught the various testing procedures as well as the legal and regulatory standards that are applicable in various industrial settings.

Mechanical engineers will learn to work with various individuals both in team positions as well as in project coordinator, project managers or management positions. Often advanced level mechanical engineers may choose to work privately as consultants or work on a per project basis. Many mechanical engineers also work closely with the original designer of the product or item to allow the most effective product to be developed. Typically the mechanical engineer will also design or approve the various testing methods and will assist in planning appropriate data collection, working with troubleshooting as well as implementing modifications to the design as necessary.
