Distance Learning & Online Materials Science Degree Programs
A degree in materials science and engineering will give the graduate a thorough understanding of the composition and construction of various types of materials used in development, production, industry and manufacturing and how these materials can be most effectively used in new and existing products and design. Material science really is at the core of most engineering projects, as choosing the right materials to work with is often the key to the success or failure of the project. Material science engineers and professionals are often consulted in the design or implementation phase of a product but may also be involved in ongoing testing of new or existing materials or in problem solving or troubleshoot production, equipment or product development issues and concerns.
Courses in the degree program will involve in depth understanding of chemical composition, mostly in the field of inorganic chemistry. Students will also study advanced mathematical concepts, physics and other sciences. They will learn how to compete stress tests on various materials, complete chemical analysis, evaluate materials failures and evaluate and complete risk analysis and evaluations on the various materials being considered for a project or specific production. Many students in the material sciences program are currently mechanical engineers or are working towards a degree in mechanical engineering.
Students will also have the opportunity to understand how to synthesis various materials, structural properties of materials, material interactions that strengthen or weaken the final product as well as the reporting process and risk analysis review procedures. Graduates of the program may work in research and development laboratories, as product or quality control supervisors or managers, or as consultants if they posses a master's level degree and a professional engineering standing. Typically this is a very hands-on type of career that provides lots of challenges and variety.
