Distance Learning & Online Life Care Planning Degree Programs
Life care planning is an essential program of study for those individuals that will work professionally with elderly patients or those with terminal illnesses and conditions. The course of study is designed to assist professionals in counseling, supporting, and assisting the terminally ill or dying patient in making appropriate decisions with regards to their medical care and treatment. Some life care planning professionals may also be able to provide limited amounts of legal information for the patients and their families to consider, although they will not be able to advise the patient with regards to legal issues. Since this is a very technical issue, students will clearly learn what is appropriate and correct for them to work with the patients on and what will need the assistance of an attorney to complete. The legal and liability issues with regards to caring for the terminally ill and assisting them in making appropriate medical and life style decisions will be strongl! y emphasized throughout the program.
Typically students completing a course or certification in life care planning will already work in a hospital or health care setting, usually in long term care facilities. They may work as specialized nurses such as geriatric care nurses, oncology nurses or nurses working in intensive care or cardiac units. Therapists, rehabilitation specialists and even counselors and social workers in these programs can benefit from a course that address the appropriate ways to work with dying patients.
Classes will include counseling, grief counseling and support for both the patient and the families, legal issues, medical procedures and practices as they relate to terminally ill or elderly patients, aging, mental health issues associated with aging and the assessment and evaluation of a patients ability to make informed decisions about their own care.
