Distance Learning & Online Library Science Degree Programs

    A degree in library science will allow the graduate to work in many different occupations, not just as a librarian. Graduates may be employed as media center directors, researchers, legal librarians, public school or university librarians, medical records librarians or even as museum curators or archivists. The course of study teaches logical, organized thinking with an emphasis on using technology and internet resources to remain currently and up to date in methodologies used. Library science graduates will need to have an understanding of the latest trends and changes in research, archiving and database management as it pertains to library resources.

    A course of study in library science includes classes in databases and database management, internet searching, various specialized search engines, cataloging and categorizing material according to standards and protocols as well as managing, maintaining and recording books and other sources of information within the library or records area. Many government agencies use graduates of library science programs to manage and coordinate the vast amounts of paperwork and files that are required to keep data current and accurate. Library science graduates may also work exclusively in computerizing archives and developing appropriate information retrieval systems for network users and secure or open databases. Many courses in the program allow librarians to use the most up-to-date and current software programs available.

    A degree in library science, depending on the type of employment and the years of experience, can result in a very high paying career. Typically a librarian earns approximately $40,000, with those that work as managers or supervisors often having salaries that exceed $70,000 per year. Librarians or library and information science professionals usually work standard office hours with little or no overtime. Depending on the hours of the library or media center there may be some weekend or evening hours required.
