Distance Learning & Online Legal Studies Degree Programs
Classes in the program of legal studies are not designed to meet the requirements for a law degree, but rather are designed to allow the graduate to have a strong understanding of the historical and current perspectives with regards to laws and law making. A degree in legal studies will include classes in courts and court systems, appeals, family law issues, criminal and civil laws, estates and will planning, contacts, filing law suits, business laws and bankruptcy issues, as well as preparing legal documents. Most paralegals will complete a legal studies program as part of their training. Students will be able to focus their studies on specific areas of interest or they may choose to complete a general program. Some graduates may go on to work in local or state governments and agencies, act as advisors to businesses and companies or legal issues, or even work as advocates or community resources with regards to legal issues.
A paralegal, which is the career that most students completing the degree in legal studies will work towards, includes almost all aspects of legal pleading preparation. Paralegals in some states are able to work independently of lawyers, preparing court documents for clients in issues such as divorce, title transfers, estates and wills and other issues where the will be non-contested court proceedings. Typically credentialing or certification is required for paralegals whether they are working with an attorney or if they are working on their own.
Courses in the legal studies program will include will and estate planning, financial planning and basic accounting, legal document preparations, investigative techniques, preparing trial books, filing pleadings, working directly with clients and researching case history for attorneys in specific types of cases. Excellent written and verbal communication skills will be very important for a graduate of the legal studies program.
