Distance Learning & Online Law Degree Programs
A law degree is a very generalized course of study that typically starts at an associate level and works towards a Juris Doctor or JD degree, which is the degree that most judges and lawmakers hold. In the middle, of course, are a variety of degrees and professions ranging from paralegals through to attorneys, all specializing in various aspects of the law. Attorneys may choose to focus on family and divorce law, injury and insurance law, real estate law, disabilities law, civil law or estates, trusts and wills. There are many other specializations that law degree holders may choose to work in, and companies, private citizens, and government agencies all work with attorneys to ensure that they are making the correct decisions and following the laws regarding many daily transactions and activities within the company. Some law degree students may also work as advisors in international law or contracts and acquisitions, or even working as negotiators or mediators between govern! ments or international agencies.
Students with law degrees may also work directly for individuals as lawyers or paralegals. They may also find work as lobbyists and advocates for private interest groups or community based organizations. Graduates of law degrees can work as researchers, professors or even writers focusing in the legal arena and legal aspects of society. Students must complete rigorous examinations to pass the bar and become licensed to practice law within a particular state.
Courses in a law degree will vary but all will include research and investigation, court systems, legal and ethical issues in the practice of law, pleadings, court procedures, legal analysis, critical thinking and effective communication, expression and analysis. Students will also learn how to effectively question clients, prepare them for court, and rules of evidence and procedure.
