Distance Learning & Online Law Enforcement Degree Programs
It is more typical for individuals wishing to pursue a career in law enforcement to complete a degree in law enforcement or criminal justice before applying to the various law enforcement agencies. These programs are designed to give students the theoretical knowledge and develop critical thinking and analysis skills that will make them more effective and disciplined law enforcement professionals. A degree in law enforcement is typically offered at the associate and bachelor degree, with additional levels of training usually focusing more on the forensic science, psychology or administrative aspects of law enforcement.
Law enforcement degrees will focus on developing the student's ability to think about many different aspects of information, to work with others within a law enforcement career, and to learn to use effective decision-making and evaluative choices. Law enforcement degrees will typically include areas of study such as crime scene investigation, forensic science and evidence analysis, procedures and practices, policies and legal issues in law enforcement, ethical issues in law enforcement, apprehension, court systems and procedures, testimony as well as an understanding of the criminal justice and corrections systems.
Graduates of an associates or bachelor level program may choose to move directly into law enforcement academies or may continue on with their education moving into law, crime scene investigation and technology or some aspect of forensic science. All students will gain experience in using the latest in technology in law enforcement, and may find that they are interested in pursuing a career in economic or computer crimes. Students may also move into areas such as private security or loss prevention, fraud investigations, arson investigations or working in regulatory agencies or government agencies. Some may also move into juvenile detention and treatment or working as parole or probation officers within the criminal justice system.
