Distance Learning & Online K-12 Education Degree Programs
Graduates from a K-12 education program have a generalists training in education in the four key areas. These include early childhood development, elementary school, middle school and ending with high school. Graduates are qualified to teach those grade levels, although many states and local districts will require additional endorsements or certification for specific subject areas or specialized areas of teaching such as English as a second language, gifted and talented, or special education. Typically as teachers progress to higher grade levels the demand for individual training in specific subject areas will increase.
Courses in a generalist K-12 education program include assessment and evaluation of students, effective and best teaching practices, research methods, curriculum assessment, teaching methodologies and an strong background in developmental issues, learning strategies and modalities and an understanding of how to modify and adapt curriculum for students of various abilities. Graduates will learn how to teach the various subject strands including mathematics, social sciences, life sciences, English and literature, reading and technology. Additional courses will also include information on physical education, legal and ethical issues, working with parents and developing leadership and classroom management strategies.
Students will have opportunities to learn to be effective communicators, to try out new techniques and strategies and to learn the relevant educational and legal issues with regards to teaching in a particular area or location. Organizational structure of schools and school districts will also be addressed as will team building courses designed to help teachers work together within school systems. Teachers will develop lesson plans, teaching strategies and practical applications of the information through class assignments and projects. Some students graduating from the program may also work as specialized consultants or resource teachers within a school or school district, depending on their level of specialization and prior knowledge or experience .
