Distance Learning & Online Interior Design Degree Programs
Graduates of interior design programs have opportunities to work in retail, architecture and landscaping, building and home manufacturing, real estate offices in showing and staging homes, and for interior design companies. Those interior designers that continue on to master level programs often work as team leaders, interior design project managers or project coordinators or work as design consultants to a variety of businesses, builders or hotel or residential managers. The average income of a graduate working in the interior design field is about $41,000 per year with more well-known and distinguished interior designers earning over $100,000 per year.
Courses in interior design include subjects such as space management, architecture, color and design, CAD (computer-aided drafting) drawing, layout and design, showroom management, human behavior and even art and art history. Students may choose to specialize in one aspect of interior design after they have completed a bachelor level program. Currently there are twenty-three states that require interior designers to complete state exams for licensure to work as an interior designer. Most master level graduates will work as the managers or owners and consultants for interior design firms or as department or project managers for interior design or interior product companies.
Interior design students that are planning to start their own businesses will also find business management courses, strategic planning, budgeting and basic financial courses beneficial. The program emphasizes the use of various types of technology in the interior design field including virtual interior design layout programs that allow the designer to create three-dimensional models of rooms and entire houses for clients to examine prior to starting projects. Space management and style are always key in interior design programs as is an understanding and appreciation of classical styles and designs from around the world.
