A degree in information technology may be as broad in scope or as focused as the student requires. The degree is highly flexible and will allow students to choose courses from a variety of areas within the field, especially in the associate and bachelor level programs. Master level program and master certificate programs tend to be more specific, but they still offer more choices than many other degree programs. Information technology is the course of study that allows students to understand and develop practical applications in storing, retrieving and sharing information to make systems and businesses more efficient and productive. Typically bachelor or associate level students will include topics such as databases and database management, information systems design, basic networking and network security, business management courses and the application of information technology, web design basics and some web application courses.
In master level programs students will take more advanced issues and more in depth aspects of business and business management within the information technology or information security areas. Security for data storage and retrieval and networking security are more of a focus, as are issues with regards to legal and ethical considerations in information technology. Advanced web application courses, e-commerce and e-business as well as web design are often incorporated into these advanced level information technology degrees.
Graduates of a program of study in information technology will have a good foundation in theory as well as actually experience in using the various technologies. The emphasis throughout the programs will be on developing good communication skills and learning to work as part of a team, while still being able to assume leadership positions. Business analysis, finance and project management classes will all contribute to making this a highly applicable degree in all business and organizational settings.
