Virtually all businesses, companies, industries, organizations and government departments now use networks or the internet to share information through databases or direct transfer of information through other formats. A degree in information systems allows students to design, layout, supervise and monitor installation, develop and monitor those systems needed for information retrieval and exchange. In addition these programs also allow for the development of the troubleshooting and problem solving skills needed to address problems within new or existing systems or to modify and expand current systems without requiring a complete and costly re-design.
Classes within the program of study will include topics such as networking, wireless networking, security issues in networking, communications and technology, systems design, databases and database management, programming languages such as SQL and Java, as well as hardware and software applications in networking and information systems design and development. Students may choose to complete a broad scope of study or may focus on one or more areas of interest. Some students may also complete technical certification in various systems and computer languages or other computer programming specializations. Generally these certifications and specializations are earned during the bachelor or higher degrees, but some students in the associate's degree may also be qualified.
Graduates of the program of information systems can find work in almost any business setting. Most bachelor level graduates will be qualified for entry level management positions and with additional training and experience can advance through to senior level management opportunities. Associate level degree holders typically start working as information system or computer technicians and then, either by working up through the ranks or by continuing on with their education, they are able to enter into management positions or work independently in their own company or consulting firm.
