Information science is the ability to get information from one user to another through the use of technology. Graduates of the program can find many different and diverse career opportunities ranging from database management, design and administration through to developing information systems for hospitals, health care facilities, government offices or private businesses, companies and organizations. Students typically start their degree with an associates level program and then advance to a bachelor in information science. Courses within the information science program of study include systems administration classes, security, management of business applications, information systems, databases, web applications, e-business and e-commerce and networking and security issues with regards to information sharing and exchange. Students will be given practical applications to use the theoretical knowledge that they obtain within the classes, plus they will be encouraged to develop teamwork skills and leadership abilities. Effective communication in both written and verbal forms will be stressed throughout the course of study.
Students will focus on the management and business applications of information science, so a lot of the classes will focus on the use of databases and data administration throughout the program. Students will learn how to design, set retrieval protocols, provide secure access to information as well as troubleshoot and problem solve issues within either the database or the networking system. Analysis and evaluation as well as logical and organized problem solving approaches will the corner stone of the troubleshooting focus. Real world examples and scenarios will provide students with actual problems to work with and solve, helping them become more effective within their future or current careers.
