Information assurance degrees are usually offered as higher level degrees within the information technology department. Information assurance degrees are designed to allow those already familiar with computer and networking security issues and concepts in addition to having sound educational backgrounds in information technology both in theory and practice specialize in working in problem solving and prevention of security issues within a system. Typically the information assurance degree is offered at the master level and requires a prerequisite of a bachelor degree in information technology, computer science, computer networking or computer or networking security.

Graduates of a program in information assurance may work as consultants or advisors, being hired on an as needed basis by companies, industry, hospitals, health care facilities, schools or government agencies. Almost any company, organization or service that shares information over a network or through the internet can benefit from the services of an information assurance consultant or professional. Not only do information assurance professionals find problems or possible leaks or breaches within the system, they also can work to prevent these problems from developing in the future. This assurance is very important for most companies and agencies, as well as for their customers and clients. Students may also find work in law enforcement agencies, through private investigators, or even in government oversight agencies such as Homeland Security.

Classes within the information assurance program include advanced network security, cyber laws, ethical considerations and protocols, computer forensics and examination, finance and accounting principles, intrusion detection systems and monitoring, e-commerce policies and safeguards, secure websites, encryption, decision making, reporting and leadership skills. Students will use real examples and case studies as well as work with cutting edge programs and applications to keep current on the latest in security issues.
