Distance Learning & Online Homeland Security Degree Programs
Much of the demand for Homeland Security professionals have occurred in the last several years in response to increasing international and domestic terrorism threats. Homeland security has evolved to more than just responding and preparing for acts of terrorism, it also works with immigration, border security, international security and response to natural and man-made disasters within communities and areas. While the basic information within the Homeland security program will be very similar to that of a law enforcement degree, more advanced courses and specialized programs will provide advanced levels of knowledge on assessment, evaluation and risk analysis, decision making, research and information evaluation, as well as preparedness and response issues from a legal, ethical and security perspective.
Classes within the degree program will range from law enforcement classes such as laws and legal issues, ethical considerations in law enforcement and security, apprehension techniques, evidence and investigative techniques, as well as court preparation and testimony. Students will learn about weapons and correct procedures for handling weapons, hazardous material identification and handling, bombs and explosives, security protocols, internet and computer security and technology, sociology, multiculturalism and cultural diversity and terrorism and terrorist groups both nationally and internationally. The structure and organization of the Homeland security field will also be discussed throughout the programs. Communication, leadership skills and working collaboratively with outside private and government agencies will be stressed in more advanced classes designed for those entering the field in management and supervisory positions.
Students usually enter Homeland security programs though starting at the associates or bachelor level and working up through a master level degree program. Some students that are already working within the Homeland security department or are working in the security field or as law enforcement officers with criminology or criminal justice degrees may be able to move directly into master level programs depending on prior educational experience.
