Distance Learning & Online Health Information Technology Degree Programs
A relatively new degree, the program in health information technology allows those students that are interested in both health care and the use of technology within the field to combine their interests in to one program. Typically graduates of the program will find employment in hospitals and facilities as billing, coding or informatics technicians, databases managers or administrators, sales or marketing professionals for health care software, professional trainers for software programs or technology services, insurance claims adjustors in the health care field or managers or administrators of health informatics departments in large or small hospitals and health care facilities. In doctor's offices or small clinics the graduate of a health information technology degree may complete several of these jobs, literally being the technology department for the office.
Courses in the health information technology degree include course on medical terminology and treatments, hospital procedures, software development for health care facilities, database management, administration and development, professional training design, technology based applications, networking, network security, privacy laws and their relation to technology, biomedical applications for software and software in medical research and treatment. Students will be encouraged to use the latest in technology in class assignments and projects and will be able to use the technology in real world applications as they relate to hospital and health care facilities. Students will also work directly with professionals in the field to clearly understand the trends in this developing sector of hospital administration.
Most students begin this course of study by completing an associate's level degree. In more advanced degrees they typically specialize in one or more areas of health information technology. Those students that wish to specialize in software design and applications in medical research will complete more technology courses, whereas those that wish to move towards sales and marketing will take more business directed courses.
