Distance Learning & Online Health Services Degree Programs
As a broad category of study, health services can include almost any subject or area relating to the direct patient care through to the management and administration of the hospital or health care facility. Health services are often a stand alone degree but it may also be a minor or major within another management or health related program of study. The individualized nature of the program allows students maximum flexibility in choosing classes and determining areas of interest. Many students that enter the associates program in health services use this as a stepping stone program to more advanced and specialized areas of education within the health care field.
As indicated above, the courses in health care come from a wide range of prospective fields of study. Students may complete courses in first aid treatments such as CPR, or they may also take courses in health administration, billing, human resources or working as a laboratory assistant or technician. Classes usually include topics such as the legal and ethical issues in both administration and direct patient care, protocols and procedures within the various hospital and health care settings as well as organizational structure and development and patient services.
Graduates of a health services course with a specialization in informatics or health information technology will be able to work as entry level medical billers and codes, medical transcriptionists, or data entry personnel. They may also work directly for physician's offices as receptionists, office staff or even as data managers within the facility. Some students may also work as insurance claims adjustors, quality control technicians or as staff that works in direct patient care with various types of current technology. Information technicians with a degree in health services may also be eligible for promotion to management positions.
