Distance Learning & Online Health Informatics Degree Programs
A graduate of a health informatics course will be able to be employed in various areas within the health care sector that address the transfer and recording of health related records for patients. Students that take the course will need to be familiar with basic medical terminology and procedures as well as issues pertaining to privacy laws and regulations regarding the exchange and storage of health related information. Many graduates of health informatics will also have a previous degree in a medical field or may also be working in areas such as database management or as database administrators that are moving into the health care field.
Courses in the program will include legal and privacy regulations for health information at all levels, research and study design, data collection and management, databases and database administration, health and medical terminology, computer systems, operating systems and, depending on the focus, classes around network security and internet transmission of data over restricted access programs. Students may also take additional courses in communications, billing and coding, medical insurance, office management or computer applications. Typically students will tend to focus on one area and will become specialized in this particular field rather than trying to complete all the diverse courses offered.
The professions within the health informatics field vary greatly depending on the type of degree in health informatics obtained and any prior medical training or experience. Some health informatics graduates may work directly with patients in front offices or patient reception areas whereas others may work strictly in data entry rooms in larger hospitals and health care facilities. In addition some graduates may work in quality control aspects of health care, completing follow-up surveys and satisfaction research based on treatment within a health care facility.
