Distance Learning & Online Forensics Degree Programs
A degree in forensics will prepare the graduate to work in the crime scene investigation and evidence collections aspects of a criminal investigation. Most forensics technicians and professionals are not law enforcement agents; rather they work with law enforcement officers to unravel the many clues and the evidence left behind at the scene of the crime. Some forensics professionals will work only in a laboratory setting whereas others may work more closely with law enforcement, actually going to crime scenes and documenting evidence, taking photography or molds and preserving evidence for further examination.
Students that complete a degree in forensics may find work with police and law enforcement agencies, with Homeland Security agencies or department, through private investigators or with hospitals, medical examiners or with various government laboratories or departments. The analytical skills and procedural protocols that are emphasized through the program also make those with a forensics degree idea for management level training and positions once they are gained actual work experience in the field.
Classes within the program of forensics will vary depending on the area that the student wishes to focus on. All courses will usually include evidence gathering methods at crime scenes, crime scene investigation, evidence preservation, procedures and protocols, fingerprinting technology, photography and digital imagining or photography, the use of technology in crime scene investigation, computer investigation, DNA study, toxicology, serology and even chemistry as it applies to crime scene investigation. Weapons and ballistics, wound patterns and identification as well as specialized procedures for examining underwater or concealed crime scenes will be addressed in more advanced classes or specialized diploma classes. Students will be expected to complete mathematics, physics and other science classes to assist them in the correct analysis of evidence.
