Distance Learning & Online Food and Nutrition Degree Programs
Degrees in food and nutrition science prepare the graduate for work within the food industry, research and development sector or the nutrition industry. Many graduates of an associates degree in food and nutrition science can obtain assistants degrees in food research and development, in hospitals, schools or companies as food service workers or planners, or with food processing companies. Those with bachelor or higher degrees may work as nutritionalists or dieticians, sports nutritionalists, researchers for private companies, health advisors, weight loss consultants or even as managers or product development professionals within the food industry.
Since health is so closely related to diet and eating correctly, many graduates of the food and nutrition science programs, especially those with masters or doctorate level degrees work as private consultants or clinicians working directly with individuals with health concerns. Some nutritionalists work specifically with obese or overweight individuals while other help diabetics and others with dietary restrictions or needs with meal planning, training regarding managing nutrition, or even with school children and health teachers. Nutritionalists and dieticians may also work for school cafeterias, in hospitals or in private companies or agencies.
Courses within the food and nutritional science program include meal planning, food requirements, biochemistry, digestion, disorders affecting the absorption of food, body growth and development, laboratory techniques, nutritional science, exercise and nutrition, food science and preservation of food as well as health regulations regarding food and food items. Advanced programs will allow students to focus on one or more areas of study whereas basic programs will provide a strong foundation for both work opportunities as well as advanced education. Food and nutrition graduates may also find work with research and test marketing companies and may become involved in developing new food sources or types of foods.
