Distance Learning & Online Fashion Design Degree Programs
Students that are pursuing a degree in fashion design usually have an interest in becoming an independent designer themselves or working with a design house or company as a designer. Most fashion design graduates will first start working in an apprenticeship or internship position in a fashion design house, retail outlet or clothing manufacturer before branching out on their own. The fashion design industry is located in several different cities internationally, so most graduates of the program understand that their best options for employment is moving to these locations upon completion on of the study.
Courses in the fashion design degree include computer-aided design (CAD), color, drawing, textiles, art, marketing and management, budget and project management as well as business essentials needed to be an effective employee or entrepreneur in the fashion industry. Far from being a specialized program the degree is designed to provide a broad theoretical and practical basis to give students all the information that they need for entering the workforce. Courses allow students to understand how a garment is designed from conceptualizing a design through to sketching, making patterns, choosing fabric, and final presentation of the piece. Students are also given information on marketing, advertising, and budgeting for production within the fashion design industry. Emphasis will be placed on both creativity as well as business development.
Students will study designers and design business models that are currently in use in the industry. They will use real world case studies to develop an understanding of the industry from start to finish. Technology in fashion design will be a key component of the courses, as well communication and teamwork. Students will complete a portfolio of designs and concepts prior to completing the program that can be used when entering the workforce.
