Distance Learning & Online Environmental Engineering Degree Programs
A program of study in environmental engineering will allow the graduate to learn various methods and systems for ensuring the protection of the environment through various testing, monitoring and evaluation of changes within the area. Environmental engineers may choose to focus on one aspect of the profession such as water quality, air quality, microbiological processes, chemical processes within the environment as well as issues regarding forestry, agriculture and the preservation of the environment in areas of recent or existing development or industry. Environmental engineering is different that conservation or forestry in that the approach is from a data and mathematical base with the engineer designing, implementing and monitoring systems to maintain and enhance the environment from a data driven perspective.
Courses within the program of study will allow students to focus in on an area of interest or complete a more generalized program. Typically courses will include scientific research methods, various testing procedures, microbiology, chemistry, biology, microbiology or systems management within various water treatment, sewage or recycling plants or operations. Students will also gain experience in understanding the political, legal and ethical issues relating to environmental engineering and environmental agencies the will monitor and evaluate the various systems design and effectiveness.
Many of the graduates of environmental engineering programs work with development or construction companies, oil, natural gas or mining companies, government agencies or nonprofit or for profit local, national or international environmental monitoring companies. They may be called to assist in the case of disasters such as oil spills or chemical spills, clean up of old disposal sites, or even designing and developing new systems that are more environmentally friendly. Leadership skills, effective communication and the ability to work with teams of professions is covered throughout the course of study.
