Distance Learning & Online English Degree Programs
A degree in English is considered to be one of the strongest of the foundation educational careers, often being used as a stepping stone towards masters level programs in education, human resource management, business, administration or even communications and political sciences and the humanities programs. In addition to this option many graduates of English programs continue on to work as writers, poets, journalists, researchers, public relations officials and spokespeople, bloggers or even as lawyers, advertisers, managers and marketing professionals.
Graduates of English programs will compete courses such as composition, historical perspectives of writing, literature, effective communication, classical literature, poetry, creative writing, technical writing and verbal communication. Courses will focus on creative and logical thinking, presentation of ideas in written and verbal formats and effective research skills. Students will learn to be analytical and objective in their research and will also become comfortable with using a variety of technologies including computers and databases in their research and class projects and assignments. Graduates of the program will be able to identify various styles of literature and define and describe the various genres as well as identify, compare and contrast famous authors of the various styles and genres. The courses will focus on the impact of literature and written and spoken information on the various cultures both historically and in modern times.
A graduate student of an English program will earn, on average, $44,000 per year after five years in the profession. Some graduates, such as those that write independently or that work for large companies or agencies may make considerably more than that. Many English program graduates continue on to complete degrees as teachers and work for public or private school systems on their respective pay scales. Some will also specialize in the study of one genre or historical period and may choose to teach at a university or college level after completing a doctorate or master level of study.
