Distance Learning & Online Engineering Management Degree Programs
Typically a bachelor or master level degree in engineering management is completed by those professionals already working as engineers within a particular specialization or field. The bachelor level program will often qualify engineers to manage or coordinate small projects or to work as lead engineers within a projection or company. Master level program are usually complete by those professional engineers that wish to work as mid to upper level management positions or as project managers for large or ongoing projects or jobs. Engineering management degrees are also completed by engineers wishing to work through their own firms or as consultants on a project-by-project or contract basis.
Degrees in engineering management are not topic specific with regards to the engineering field. Rather than address issues within the specific area of engineering such as civil, computer, electrical or mechanical, the program allows students to learn the skills needed to be effective leaders, managers and administrators within the engineering sector. Classes have in depth coverage of business management and management of people, products and industry as well as topics on international markets, finance, planning and budget development.
Courses will include issues on leadership skill development, effective management strategies, organizational management, problem solving, conflict resolution and effective communication. Team building, coordination of projects, inventory and supply chain management, legal and regulator issues in engineering as well as the technology used in engineering management will all be topics addressed throughout the program of study. Graduates will be able to apply these concepts and strategies to their own particular area of engineering through class assignments and projects that are practical and strategically planned. These assignments and projects can often be used directly in the engineers current work environment and helps them become effective leaders even prior to graduation from the degree program.
