Distance Learning & Online EMS & Paramedic Degree Programs
For those that are interested in being first responders arriving to the scene in cases of medical emergencies a degree in EMS and paramedic training is essential of licensure and professional qualifications. The advanced life support or ASL training is required in most states and jurisdictions to be employed as an EMS or paramedic, and this structured training allows students to learn to evaluate, assess and correctly administer emergency medical treatment to allow patients to get to a hospital or emergency clinic to obtain full medical treatment. Since EMS and paramedics often have to be the eyes and ears for the doctors, their ability to assess and evaluate both the patient and the situation is critical to the health and well being of the patient.
Courses in an EMS and paramedic program focus on diagnosis, assessment and treatment of the patient both with and without support from medical teams. Students will learn advanced CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use of various medications, stabilizing, monitoring and reporting patient vital signs and statistics, emergency first aide, anatomy, physiology and human systems functions. Students will learn basic medical procedures, the use of emergency equipment, National Safety Council classes as well as specific courses on identifying issues such as drug overdoses, diabetic conditions, allergic reactions, epilepsy, heart attack and stroke and other emergency situations that require immediate care rather than stabilization.
In most areas graduates will be required to work in a mentorship or intern program before they are allowed to be fully certified as EMS workers or paramedics. Even nurses moving into the role of EMS and paramedics will need to complete additional training and certification. EMS professionals and paramedics are required to maintain yearly continuing education hours to keep up their certification.
