Distance Learning & Online Emergency Management Degree Programs
The course of study in an emergency management program is designed to prepare the graduate to plan, evaluate and act to contain, manage and support emergency situations in local, national or international crisis issues. Depending on the level of degree granted, the professional may head up a private organization or work within a government agency, law enforcement group, Homeland Security or FEMA department or work in virtually any other organization that is involved in first respondent management. An emergency management degree is not just designed to respond in the event of a natural or man-made crisis or disaster, rather the degree emphasizes the advanced planning, rehearsal and evaluation and modification to potential crisis events within the area of control. For example, an emergency management professional at an airport may train and plan for a plane accident, terrorist threat or severe weather conditions. The classes included in the study will all enhance the currently levels of understanding and will cover topics such as hazardous materials, emergency medical systems, communications, management of services, preparedness and community involvement and interaction in the development and practice of plans.
Students will learn how to best prepare for natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and severe winter storms or power outages caused by weather. Emergency transportation, coordination of first responders and law enforcement will also be addressed. Issues relating to foreign or domestic terrorism, hazardous waste contamination, epidemics of diseases and other potential man-made or natural disasters will also be covered in the program.
